The MiniBooNE Beamline
To get protons from a standing start up to the 800 GeV energies of the Tevatron, the Fermilab beam jockeys use a long chain of accelerators, one after another. One of the "mid-range" devices, the Fermilab Booster, is used to provide MiniBooNE with a beam of 8 GeV protons. This energy was chosen because it will yield a beam of neutrinos in the few GeV energy range, which will minimize backgrounds and provide sensitivity to oscillations with parameters in the LSND signal region.
